Biography

Afruz Amighi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1974. She is a Brooklyn-based artist. Amighi's upbringing infuses her work with global awareness and a distanced view of her native country's turmoil. She has exhibited her work internationally and in 2008 was awarded the Jameel Prize by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Her work explores the social and political history of Iran with references to traditional Islamic art.

She served as Artist-in-Residence in partnership with the Intersections program at the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. She presented a public lecture at the University of Hawai’i on November 10, 2010. She conducted studio visits and advised graduate students from the university’s art department.
